Congratulations to the North Stanly Dixie Majors for winning the O-Zone State Championship for the second consecutive year.
The youngsters traveled to Mt. Tabor and won a doubleheader on the last day of the tournament to defend their title.
From all reports, their pitchers were outstanding and the defense was solid throughout the tournament. In fact, the combination was so good that they didn’t allow Reidsville a run in two games.
Strong pitching and solid defense, that’s a winning combination more often than not. If the North Stanly youngsters can continue to excel in those two areas, they could have a real fun time beginning Friday in Pascagoula, Miss.
Of course, it never hurts to hit the ball well and put lots of runs on the scoreboard.
• The opening game of football season will be Aug. 22 and the four Stanly County schools should be better than last year for certain.
This time last year, there was not a returning starting quarterback to be found in the county.
This year, North Stanly is firmly set with junior Desi Brown, one of the county’s best all-around athletes. Look for Brown to have a break out season and catch the eyes of college scouts. Not only can Brown run and throw the ball, he’s an excellent leader with big-play potential written all over him.
At the end of last season, I chose Detric Allen as the top quarterback in Stanly County for primarily one reason ... he led his team deep into the playoffs.
Allen will be much improved this year in his junior year and will be playing with a much deeper and experienced team while Brown will again be leading a team with less depth and one more vulnerable to injuries because of that fact.
At Albemarle, Davonte Lilly and Jamie Polk split time last year with Polk taking over late and leading the Bulldogs in the playoffs. Polk was very solid running the offense and made good decisions late in the season. Then during basketball season, Polk made huge strides at point guard and will doubtless do likewise this fall.
West Stanly returns Chauncey Bruton, but new Coach Mark Little will also look at a couple quarterbacks up from the jayvee - Demetrius Ingram and Zach Honeycutt.
One thing is certain as the new season approaches, the quarterback situation at all four schools will be improved over this point last season.
And that is definitely a plus.
