I can’t wait to start this

By Charles Curcio, Sports Editor

Thursday, August 14, 2008 Waiting is no fun.

Anyone that has been sitting at the doctor’s office and had to read a magazine older than baseball knows that waiting canbe agonizing.

Right now, I feel like a little kid looking into the oven for the hundredth time looking to see if the chocolate chip cookies are done.

The 2008 high school sports season is upon us and there are so many questions to be answered, stories to be told, games to be played and drama to unfold.

Standing on the precipice of the season is really fun yet hard at the same time.

There are more than a few stories that I will be particularly interested in this season

Can South Stanly live up to their preseason expectations?

I don’t ever recall the bar being set so high for the Bulls in preseason with fans expecting South to compete for a conference championship.

If Tuesday’s scrimmage is any indication of how South Stanly will play this year, the Bulls are stronger, fast and comfortable out on the field.

The Bulls matched up well against the spread offense of Mike Minter’s First Assembly Eagles.

Another subplot to South’s season is the question of whether or not they can be the team to break up the string of Albemarle and West Stanly exclusively exchanging the Stanly Cup amongst themselves.

Will Hanna Herlocker continue her dominance in Rocky River Conference tennis and make a strong state title run?

I have never been able to muster the kind of energy it takes to play tennis.

I can recall at Pfeiffer seeing the tennis team eat more than the Oklahoma offensive line and I wondered how they could eat that much and not be a big as a house.

Then I saw them practice. Question asked and answered.

Who will rise to prominence on the soccer fields this year and take the county championship?

It’s a shame that we don’t have the pre-season Turf Wars anymore.

It was always nice to see all four teams in three nights go at it to see who was the top the heap.

Besides, it was always held at North Stanly, where a plate of chili cheese fries could keep a reporter fed for days on end.

4)Will Jade Farlow continue her dominance of cross country or will someone else emerge from the pack?

5) Can the Albemarle volleyball squad repeat last season’s efforts and win the conference this year?

Finally, what will be this year’s big surprises, whether it be an upset or a breakout season?

Each sport we have in the schools has its own drama and storylines.

We will be there are to catch “the human drama of athletic competition,” as ABC broadcaster Jim McKay used to say.

Game on!
