The rules are the rules for all...right?

By Charles Curcio, Sports Editor

Sunday, August 17, 2008 There was a lively discussion in the newspaper offices this week about whether new Dodger Manny Ramirez should have to cut his hair or not just because manager Joe Torre said so.

Personally, I’m not a fan of long hair, but that’s only because if I let my hair grow too long it turns into an 70’s afro and I look like Jackie Moon.

I think hair lengths should be regulated in sports like football only because it gives the other team something else to grab onto to tackle you.

Ricky Williams had that problem at running back for Miami and he didn’t fare well. That may have to do with the fact that my Dolphins stink...well, put a pin in that and we’ll get back to it.

We all have to abide by rules every day of our lives.

The question is: how many rules does a coach need to be successful?

My favorite example of a coach that didn’t really need that many rules was John Madden.

As the Raiders’ coach, Madden had only three rules: be on time, pay attention, and play hard when we tell you to play hard.

It’s a reasonable assumption to believe that Madden assumed that his players were adults and wanted to be treated as such.

If you can’t be on time for your job, then your appreciation for that job and your commitment to it is not much.

Paying attention when people are talking or instructions are being given is not asking for too much either.

Playing hard should also be a given for anyone that steps on the field.

The Raiders of the 1970’s were truly castoffs and rejects from other teams that felt that Oakland was their last chance.

The peer pressure itself was enough to motivate people to play for the Raiders: to be on time, play when you’re hurting, give everything you have to the team.

Too bad that those ideas and commitments don’t seem to have much of a place in the sports world now. Or do they?

Does Torre really feel that the entire Dodger team will play better and make the playoffs if Manny cuts his hair? Doubtful.

Is Torre’s strong stance about this just a way of reinforcing the fact that he is the man in charge and not Manny? Maybe so.

But I guarantee if I came into work at the paper wearing a bathing suit and shower cap that I wouldn’t be working here much longer.

We all have standards in our professions that we have to live by to succeed.

The same goes for athletes at every level.

You may not understand why the coach does things they way he or she does, but you just have to believe in them and trust that they know what they are doing.

Manny should just cut his hair.
