Number one rule is: Have fun!

By Charles Curcio, Sports Editor

Sunday, August 24, 2008 Everytime I start filling out my picks for football games, I get that 80’s power ballad in my head by Whitesnake: “Here I go again on my own...”

Whether it’s the NFL on Sundays or the joy that is March Madness, I love picking games.

There is something great about getting into statistical analysis, checking on injuries, matching the styles and strategies of two teams to see who will come out on top.

I can’t tell you how many times I have picked games in the newspaper or in other public forums and been subjected to a lot of negative talk about them.

So let’s clear the air right here and now: my picks are only what I believe will happen, not necessarily what I would like to happen.

Those are two different things and I hope you gentle readers understand that.

If I pick against the Stanly team, it isn’t because that’s what I want to happen.

I’d love it if every Stanly County team wins every time out, which clearly is not possible.

If I do pick against one of our teams, it’s likely because the other team is much stronger.

The last time that I picked winners in this publication was probably around 2000 and I did so with an 80 percent success rate. Not bad if I do say so myself.

But if my pick against a team helps to motivate them to find success, then that necessarily isn’t negative.

It may make me look a little foolish, but believe me, that isn’t exactly a rare event.

At least this time around with our picks, the public has the opportunity to show their prognostication prowess.

Our football contest is designed to increase everyone’s enjoyment of the football season. It’s all meant to be fun and challenging.

This week, we didn’t include any NFL games but you can believe they will be in there next week, especially the Panthers’ games.

If you want to win this contest, you will have to come pretty close to getting every one of games right, I suspect.

This contest will really test your football knowledge at every level and we will always make sure to put in at least two games each week that are designed to be a challenge.

My personal favorite challenges this week are Memphis at Mississippi and Illinois at Missouri, our tiebreaker.

We also included Wingate and Catawba because we have Stanly County players on both rosters and it should make you have to look at Division II football.

I am calling to the carpet right now all the football fans that think that they know better then anyone in the media who’s going to win the games this season.

Do you think you can win? It’s put up or shut up time now. Cut out the coupon on the back of this section and take your best shot.
