Disputed late calls give Tigers win over S. Stanly

By Dexter Hinson, Staff Writer

Sunday, October 5, 2008 Though the temperature dropped throughout the evening, things stayed hot during the football matchup between South’s Rowdy Rebel Bulls and the home-standing Mt. Pleasant Tigers.

Winning was important to both teams who suffered losses last week, with the Bulls falling to Forest Hills and the Tigers to Monroe.

Having the home field advantage seemed to work for the Tigers from the start, winning the coin toss to receive the ball.

Both teams came within a few yards of the end zone several times in the first quarter to no avail, since neither of them scored.

By the time a minute and ten seconds went by in the second quarter, South’s James Watkins ran four yards to put the first points of the game on the scoreboard. This was followed by an extra point from kicker Mitchell Russell.

The score remained 7-0 through the end of the first half with South having the lead.

The tide turned early in the third quarter when the Tigers kicked off the ball to the Bulls,

South would fumble later in the drive and the Tigers recovered at their own 35 yard line.

In less than two minutes, both teams scored, with the Tigers still in the lead by seven at the end of the quarter.

The fourth quarter proved to be a controversial one towards the end. After the Tiger’s Haywood Forte put up six points early in the quarter, it would get down to the last 30 seconds of the game before both teams would score again.

The Tigers scored first after their own blocked field goal attempt was recovered by Dewey Andrews in the end zone. Haywood Forte ran in for two-point conversion, which put the Tigers ahead 21-14.

With the ball in possession, Bulls’ quarterback Detric Allen threw a clean pass to Cruz Long, just barely escaping the clock as time expired.

On the two-point conversion, running back James Watkins ran up the middle and then got turned around. He pitched back to lineman Aubrey Johnson in the power package.

Johnson popped in the endzone, where the referees called an inadvertent whistle. The ball was dead and the game was over.

“I thought that we had the game won twice,” South head coach Luke Little said.

Referring to the last call of the game, Little said that “I think it was the wrong call.”

South Stanly (3-3, 0-2 RRC) will be at North Stanly on Friday night.
