More can sometimes mean less

By Charles Curcio, Sports Editor

Thursday, November 20, 2008 In our country, we are always looking to improve on what we have.

It’s the “keeping up with the Jones’” theory of life that drives so many people that we all know work those extra hours just to have the latest technology toys.

Sometimes, we expand things that were fine the way they were and do not need any improvement.

The current football playoff system in North Carolina high school football is too much.

There were plenty of good reasons to expand to eight state championships in 2001.

Expanded playoffs give more teams and players the opportunity to participate in the post-season and enjoy that experience.

But how many people that witnessed the two local playoff games this week can say that the visiting team enjoyed much of anything.

Neither team provided much of a challenge for our teams, so would we not be better served if the playoffs had stronger teams that produced better games?

What can be the least enjoyable for a team that travels two hours or more that has little to no chance of winning?

I know that upsets can happen, and you have to play the game, but were the 1A playoffs so bad before that they needed to have every team make it?

I would like to see the 1A go back to the way that it was and allow the other divisions to remain subdivided with the provision that a team must win four games to reach the playoffs.

There are only 72 schools in the 1A that play football, and 64 make the subdivided playoffs.

Why even have the regular season if everyone makes the playoffs anyway? Too many teams in the playoffs cheapen the value of the postseason.

There is no chance this season of a rematch between Albemarle and South Stanly, and Thomasville would never have to play Mount Airy. As football fans, we all miss out on matchups that will not happen because of these subdivided playoffs.

If there is such a competitive imbalance between all the schools, then maybe it is time to add a 5A division.

There are 323 teams that play football in North Carolina. Divided by five divisions, that would make a little over 64 teams per division.

Half could make the playoffs in a 32-team bracket and we would have five champions instead of eight.

Teams that reach the playoffs make more money, and we all know that the almighty dollar is what rules the roost.

But how many basketball rosters are missing players because of the elongated football playoffs?

Also, if subdivided playoffs are so wonderful, why are other sports not treated the same way?

The NCHSAA should find a way to fix this system.

One thing is true: at least it’s not the BCS.
