Two games a night are just right

By Charles Curcio, Sports Editor

Tuesday, December 2, 2008 Ernie Banks, the former Chicago Cubs’ star, was famous for saying, “Let’s play two” in regards to doubleheaders.

There are some readers out there that may think nine innings for a baseball game is far too long and that doubleheaders are morally wrong.

However, I personally have always been a fan of having two games the same night, which is why I have always loved watching a girls’ basketball game with the boys’ right afterward.

It was nice, though, for the varsity girls of Albemarle to be the last game of the night on Monday, making them the main event.

I could swear, though, by the plethora of cheerleaders in the gym, that so much stomping of the bleachers happened that my backside was in midair half the night.

Nonetheless, I like the idea of only having two games in a gym and not four, as has been the practice over the years to have the JV’s play and the varsity follow afterwards.

I realize that one reason that it has been done over the years was probably because it was easier to staff one site than two.

By doing split-sites for JV and varsity, you end up having to find twice the number of faculty to spend their time at the ticket table.

Also, by having the sites split, JV coaches would not be available to help the varsity team out as an assistant.

Still, as a fan and a reporter, it’s nice to know that a game scheduled for 6:00 will actually start at that time and not 60 to 90 minutes late.

There have been nights at North Stanly through the years where the varsity boys game did not start until 8:30 and lasted until 10:30, which makes for a very late night for staff and students alike.

In doing the schedules for the Winter Sports tab (we still have some copies at the office, buy one today!), I noticed that the county games between Albemarle, North, South and West Stanly were at split sites.

The JV’s will be at one school while the varsity squads will play at the other, which will make for some thankfully shorter nights.

I spoke with Charlie Phillips, the athletic director for Stanly County Schools, who said that the main reason for doing this is to alleviate crowding problems at the varsity games.

Many fans coming to watch the varsity teams play would not be able to see the game because of the number of JV fans that would stay to watch the varsity.

The overall size of the gyms has much to do with this as well, but anything that can be done so all parents get to see their kids play is commendable.

I applaud the decision to do this.

However, the split-site games are no excuse to not still see those gyms completely full for the big rivalry games in the county.

Let’s keep those gyms full.
