West Stanly takes second out of 15 at Monroe tourney

Sunday, December 15, 2013 — The high school wrestling season is in full swing as the four teams in Stanly County have opened competition in different tournaments and home meets as well.

West Stanly takes second at Monroe Tournament

On Nov. 29 and 30, the Colts took second place out of 15 teams competing at a tournament hosted by fellow Rocky River Conference opponent Monroe.

West placed all 12 of the team’s wrestlers in the top seven, which included four finalists and four consolation finalists.

Earning gold medals for West were Jonathan Lord at 138 pounds and Wesley Gordon at 152 pounds.

Nathan Marlow (132 lbs.) and Tyler Balmas (160 lbs.) were the other two wrestlers to reach the finals of their respective weight classes, taking silver medals.

Brian Ramirez and Luke Alexander both reached their weight classes’ consolation finals, with both taking bronze medals. Ramirez wrestled at 182 pounds while Luke Alexander was in the 220-pound class.

Earning fourth-place medals and reaching their respective consolation finals for West were Jordan Doyle (170 lbs.) and heavyweight Zack Stabler.

West Stanly Wrestling

Overall, the Colts and head coach Phillip DePasquale are out to a 5-1 start this season.

West Stanly opened the season with a 66-18 win over North Moore, getting pinfall victories from Aron Marlow (105), Pavin Chunn (113), Bradley Norwood (120), Jake Balmas (145), Tyler Balmas (160), Doyle (170), Ramirez (182), Jordan Linker (195) and Alexander (220).

West then topped another Yadkin Valley Conference squad in its next match with a 51-28 win over South Davidson. Chunn, Jake Balmas and Gordon scored pinfall wins while Tyler Balmas recorded a majority decision 10-2.

The Colts also recorded a home win over East Montgomery 41-33 before the Monroe tournament.

In more recent results, West Stanly topped North Stanly 66-10 for the team’s fourth win in a row. The Colts got pinfall wins over the Comets from Chunn (113, Jonathan Lord (138), Gordon (152), Tyler Balmas (160), Doyle (170) and Alexander (220). North Stanly’s Jessie Heidel earned one of the Comets’ two wins of the match, earning a 9-1 majority decision over Jake Balmas.

On Tuesday, West Stanly took on Harding University High School and Cox Mill in a tri-match.

The Colts earned a 66-6 win over over the Harding Rams, getting pinfall wins from Marlow (132), Lord (138), Ramirez (195) and Alexander (220).

West Stanly’s five-match win streak came to an end when matched up against Cox Mill as the Colts lost 48-31. West got pinfall wins from Marlow (132), Lord (138), Ramirez (195) and Alexander (220), along with a 12-0 majority decision from Chunn at 113 pounds and a 5-1 decision for Tyler Balmas at 160 pounds.

The Colts’ wrestling season continues on Tuesday with a tri-match against Weddington and Parkwood, along with a tournament at Providence Grove scheduled for this Saturday.

South Stanly Wrestling

The Rebel Bulls opened their season on Nov. 21 with a 42-30 win over Monroe.

South had pinfall wins from Cody Shields (106), Faustino Benites (113), Brandon Lowery (170), Sawyer Bartlett (182), Jonathan Beachum (220) and Brandon Eddins (285).

The Bulls also got an 8-5 decision win for Dakota Lewellen at 138 pounds and a 12-5 decision win at 160 pounds from Josh Lewellen.

South Stanly also wrestled in the Monroe tournament as Shields earned a gold medal with a perfect 4-0 record at 106 pounds.

On Dec. 4, the Bulls took on Chatham Central and North Stanly in a tri-match, losing to the Bears 54-19 and topping the Comets 59-9.

Against the Bears, South got an 11-2 majority decision win from Benites at 113, along with a pinfall win from Montrell Brewer at 152 pounds and a 12-5 decision win for Bartlett at 195.

Versus the Comets, South posted pinfall wins by Lewellen (160), Lowery (170) and Beachum (220). Jessie Heidel earned a 7-3 decision win for North Stanly over South’s Rassoul Parsons at 145 pounds, while Jacob Cratty earned a pinfall win at 220 pounds over the Bulls’ Beachum.

South Stanly then wrestled in the 2013 Powerade Mount Pleasant Invitational on Dec. 6.

At the tournament, Shields posted the best individual record for South, going 3-1 at 105 pounds.

Benites (113), Bartlett (195) and Beachum (220) each posted two wins in their weight classes for the Bulls.

South’s last matchup was on Thursday when the Rebel Bulls lost to East Davidson 51-23. The Bulls got decision wins from Benites and Cody Pugh (132) and pinfall victories from Parsons and Bartlett.

North Stanly Wrestling

The Comets have not won a match this season as a team but have had strong individual performances.

Jessie Heidel has gone 7-4 this season at 145 pounds, having posted pinfall wins against wrestlers from Forest Hills, West Montgomery, West Stanly, South Stanly, Central Academy and South Davidson.

Second on the North team in wins is junior Jacob Cratty at 220 pounds. Cratty is 4-3 this season with pinfall wins against Union Academy, West Stanly, South Stanly and Forest Hills.

    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
