Albemarle basketball earns wins over Mount Pleasant

Sunday, December 15, 2013 — While the Albemarle boys’ basketball team opened their 2013-14 season Thursday night at home against Mount Pleasant, the girls’ squad had already played two non-conference games as they hosted the Lady Tigers on Thursday as well.

Last season, the Albemarle girls’ basketball squad only topped 60 points in two games, including last season’s home game against North Moore, where the Bulldogs scored a season high in points in a 68-50 win.

This season, the Bulldogs have already gone over the 60-point mark twice, including Thursday’s 65-34 win over the Tigers.

Akela Branch had a strong shooting night to lead Albemarle (2-1) with 24 points, knocking down 10-of-14 shots from the field. Branch posted another career double-double with 22 rebounds, adding four steals and three assists as well.

Kylie McLendon added 21 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field, adding three assists and a team-high five steals, and Tiffani Currie reached double figures with 10 points.

Jordan Coley led the Tigers (0-6) with eight points.

As a team, the Bulldogs were 6-of-11 from the free-throw line while the Tigers shot slightly better, connecting on 8-of-18 free throws.

The Bulldog defense also held Mount Pleasant to 14-of-56 overall from the field (25 percent), while Albemarle’s offense was 29-of-72 overall (40 percent).

The Bulldogs opened their season with a strong and balanced offensive effort in a 73-51 home win.

Lee Autry led five in double figures for Albemarle (1-0) with 18 points, adding 12 rebounds for the double-double. Kani Sellers had 12 points, Bryan Blanton had 11 points and Trey Nivens and Laquavius Ratliff each scored 10 points.

Jarrod Evans led Mount Pleasant (1-5) with 14 points and Tristan Coggins added 11 points.

The Bulldogs shot well at the free-throw line in the game, knocking down 11-of-13 free-throws while the Tigers shot 4-of-8 at the line.
