Monday, June 3, 2013 — West Stanly varsity softball head coach Wesley Kidd shared in post-game commentary not so long ago of the way he encouraged his players to simply pick up their gloves, bats, and softballs and have a good time playing the game. If you do not have fun playing this game, there is unnecessary pressure.
This is not to say that there was not pressure in the games leading up to the State finals for West Stanly. The Colts have been a squad that has faced adversity for the entire season, even with a 26-4 record going into the series against South Granville at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raliegh.
Through having lots of fun, solid team camaraderie, family (lots of Kidd's) and fan support, and through all the adversity, especially in the form of coming from behind in most games, the West Stanly Colts emerged victorious with a 4-3 win to complete the best-of-three sweep over the South Granville Vikings.
