Gray Stone teams open play in New Year's Clash

Tuesday, December 31, 2013 — The Knights’ varsity basketball teams played on Monday in the opening round of the Gray Stone New Year’s Clash.

The Knights’ stifiling defense helped lift the host team to the win, improving Gray Stone to 5-5 this season.

Shannon Efird led Gray Stone with 10 points.

Metrolina Christian (1-12) hit only 15.7 percent in the game on 8-of-51 shooting, while the Knights were 18-of-57 (31.6 percent).

Gray Stone will face the Cabarrus Stallions in the title game tonight at 6:30. Cabarrus advanced with a 43-41 win over Mount Pleasant.

It came down to the last possession, but the Knights boys’ squad came up just short.

The two teams traded leads, with Sam HillJennings giving Gray Stone (1-9) a three-point lead on a thre-point play with 4:31 left.

Issac Gittleman then scored five points over the next two minutes for CSD (2-5), but the Knights’ Reid Huckabee narrowed the gap to one late with two free throws. The Spartans missed five free throws late and Gray Stone missed two layup attempts, including in the final two seconds.

Gray Stone takes on the Cabarrus Stallions today at 5, while CSD faces Pine Lake Prep for the tournament title.
