West Stanly’s Courtney Grant had several blocks and a kill early in the first set, combined with two aces from Brooke McIlwaine to build a 14-2 lead. North narrowed the gap late to five points on a Bailey Blankenship block, but West got two kills from Camden Fraley to win the first set.
West built an early 5-1 lead in the second set but never led by more than four points and North kept the set close, tying the score at 17 and later at 23 before taking the final two points of the set.
The Comets led the third set 14-12 before West scored five in a row and finished the set off with two big kills from Grant.
In set four, North led 12-9 and went on a 13-0 run with kills from Blankenship and Samantha Hogan and two aces from Leah Russell.
The final set saw Blankenship start and end the set with kills as North built a 3-0 lead and led the entire set for the match victory.
“We weren’t talking at first, but then we started calling the ball,” Blankenship said, adding that the win “keeps us hopeful and shows us we can play as a team.”
“I thought our defense was good tonight,” North head coach Beth Poolos said, adding that the win was “a good morale boost” for the team.
