Chad Yow named new West Stanly baseball head coach

Tuesday, September 3, 2013 — West Stanly High School has had a long tradition of success in its baseball program, including a number of conference titles and athletes who were named as Player of the Year for the Colts’ respective conferences.

With the departure of David Lee, the Colts look to a former West Stanly standout baseball player who was a member of the team’s success as a player and has served as assistant coach as well.

Chad Yow, who played baseball for West Stanly and went on to a college career at Wingate, is the new head baseball coach for the Colts.

Yow played for West from 1998-2002 and was named the Rocky River Conference Player of the Year his senior season, playing middle infield and pitching.

The new coach also played American Legion baseball for Stanly County Post 76 as well as his four years at Wingate from 2002-2006.

After graduating from Wingate, Yow spent two seasons as an assistant coach at North Stanly for current Olympic head coach J.P. Culp. Yow was the interim head coach for the Comets in 2009, then joined Lee’s staff at West in 2011.

Yow was also the men’s and women’s tennis coach for two years at West as well as serving as an assistant boys’ basketball coach for one season.

“I’m excited to take the job; it’s one of those dream job experiences. I am excited about working with the young men we have here,” Yow said.

Yow also talked about the baseball program at West Stanly.

“Something I bring to the table is pride in the facility, pride in the tradition of being a successful program. It’s definitely good to walk into and take over a place that’s made a name for itself. I can slide right in and pick up where David left off,” Yow said.

Yow also talked about his approach to the game of high school baseball, saying that West “will be aggressive on both sides of the ball; we will attack defensively and everything on offense is aggressive. Our guys are a scrappy, small-ball kind of group.”

Joining Yow’s staff at West will be another local baseball standout in new assistant coach Jordan Sells. Sells played his high school ball at North Stanly and played collegiately at Montreat College.

Audie Lowery will return as an assistant coach for West this year.

“My coaching staff if a piece of the puzzle that I needed to have to what I want to at West and be successful; it’s a big weight lifted off my shoulders to have a good staff,” Yow said.
