West Stanly takes third at RRC tourney; South Stanly reaches state playoffs

Thursday, February 6, 2014 — In recent high school wrestling, the West Stanly Colts finished second in the Rocky Rivrer Conference regular season and took third place in the RRC tournament, while wrestlers from Albemarle, South and North Stanly competed at the Yadkin Valley Conference tourney.

Also, South Stanly as a team qualified for the 2014 NCHSAA dual team 1A playoffs, taking on fellow YVC opponent Chatham Central.

Rocky River Conference Tournament

The Colts entered the RRC tournament on Saturday looking to bounce back from a one-point loss a day earlier to Mount Pleasant for the regular-season title.

On that Friday, Aaron Marlow (106), Pavin Chunn (120), John Lord (138), Wesley Gordon (152), Brian Ramirez (182) and Zack Stabler (220) earned wins.

In the tournament, the Colts took third place overall behind Mount Pleasant and Monroe.

The Colts had four individual champions in the tournament. Pavin Chunn (113 lbs., 40-8), Lord (138 lbs., 40-4), Gordon (152 lbs., 42-8) and Luke Alexander (195 lbs., 40-9).

West also had a second place finish from Jordan Doyle at 170 pounds and third place finishes from Aaron Marlow (106) and Zack Stabler (220).

Yadkin Valley Conference Tournament

As a team, South Stanly (16-13, 7-2 YVC) finished second in the conference to Chatham Central out of 10 teams in the YVC, and had several individual champions.

At 113 pounds, Faustino Benites took first place with a 6-4 win over West Montgomery’s Chris Pipkin 6-4. He finished with a conference record of 10-1.

Sawyer Bartlett took the title for South at 182 pounds with a pinfall win over Chatham Central’s Luis Puente. He finished the regular season 9-0 in conference matches.

The Bulls also had several second place finishes, including Cody Shields (106), Montrell Brewer (152) and Brandon Lowery (170).

For Albemarle, Tate Plyler (106) and Ross Plyler (160) each posted 3-1 records, both losing their second-round matchups.

Chatham Central 42, South Stanly 28

The Bulls lost their first-round matchup with the Bears on Tuesday in the opening round of the state 1A dual team playoffs 42-28.

South got wins via pinfall from Sawyer Bartlett and Faustino Benites, along with two forfeit wins and a 14-4 majority decistion win from Cody Pugh.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
