North Stanly basketball tops North Moore

Gentry Grubb joins 1,000-point club

Thursday, February 6, 2014 — In non-conference varsity basketball games on Tuesday, North Stanly hosted North Moore.

Saturday’s Games

Girls

North Stanly 56, North Moore 36

Since head coach Greg Speight took over the girls’ basketball coaching duties at North Stanly in 2002, the Comets have gone a combined 271-55 over the past 12 seasons, due in part to having a number of prolific scorers that are all members of an exclusive club.

On Tuesday night, another player joined the 1,000-point club at North Stanly as Gentry Grubb became the 12th player to score 1,000 or more career points.

Grubb led North Stanly (11-5) with 19 points, including 8-of-12 from the free-throw line and three shots made from beyond the three-point arc.

For the season, Grubb leads the Comets with 31 three-pointers. Through her career, she has made 167 three-pointers though Tuesday’s game, hitting 29 percent overall (167-of-578) and is a lifetime 73 percent free throw shooter (181-of-247).

Grubb also becomes the eighth member of the 1,000-point club since 2004, all coached by Speight.

Heidi Smith added 12 points and Aaliyah Scott had 10 points in the 20-point home win.

“Our good defense overcame our poor free throw shooting and rebounding,” Speight said.

The Comets were 12-of-28 as a team from the foul line (43 percent).

The North head coach also congratulated Grubb on her achievement, saying she “has put in a lot of work during off seasons to have a 1,000-point career.”
