Trailing at halftime, the West Stanly boys’ basketball squad used a huge run in the third quarter to fight back and earn the team’s first Rocky River Conference win of the season 62-54 over Central Academy.

B.J. Hill led three in double figures for the Colts (4-7, 1-1 RRC) with 21 points. Ryan McCormick added 11 points and Cooper Burgess scored 10.

The Colts trailed 27-22 after the first half, but opened the third quarter with a 21-3 run and led 43-30 in the third quarter.

Central Academy (4-6, 1-1) battled back to take a four-point lead midway through the final quarter, but West Stanly’s defense came up with five consecutive stops and scored eight unanswered points to regain the lead and go on to the victory.

“Our defense was much better the first five minutes of the second half and that really gave us confidence down the stretch,” West Stanly head coach John Thompson said.

“We have emphasized taking care of the basketball in practice and did much better tonight with that.”

Thompson credited McCormick for “playing his best game of the year” while saying that Hill “was very tough down low.”

The West head coach also praised the efforts of freshman  Burgess with 10 points off the bench, saying that he “played the best game of his young career.”

West Stanly travels to Forest Hills (6-5, 1-1) on Friday night.

The West Stanly Girls entered Wednesday’s home game with the Central Academy Cougars having gone 2-2 in their last four games, including wins over Albemarle and South Stanly. Visiting Central Academy came into the game having lost six of their last seven games, but the Cougars got a balanced offensive attack and earned a 79-66 road win over the Colts.

Devan Fincher’s touch from the three-point arc led West Stanly (5-6, 0-2 RRC) as the West guard knocked down 6-of-9 shots from long distance and finished with 18 points.

After struggling to score more than 50 points in the team’s first eight games, the Colts have scored more than 50 points in three straight games, including a season-high 66 points against the Cougars (3-7, 1-1) Wednesday night. West Stanly set a season high with 13 made three-pointers.

However, according to West Stanly head coach Wesley Kidd, the Colts’ defensive efforts against Central Academy was not as strong last night.

“It was a poor defensive effort on our part; we gave them uncontested layups and didn’t get back on defense. We did not look in sync defensively at all,” Kidd said, adding that the Cougars got “too many easy shots at the basket.”

West Stanly travels to Forest Hills (8-3, 2-0)  Friday night to take on a Yellow Jackets team tied for the early lead in the conference with Cuthbertson.

“We must work on our defense; if we don’t do anything else better [this Friday] we will play better defense,” Kidd said.
