Falcons set season mark for points in win over Converse

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 — Pfeiffer University used a smothering defense limiting host Converse College to just 21 percent shooting from the floor rolling to an 89-32 victory in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons improved to 13-3 overall, 8-3 in league play, and set a new season high with 89 points scored in the win. The Valkyries drop to 0-16, 0-12 on the year.

Midway through the first period, a layup by Kellie Rhoney put Pfeiffer up 16 at 26-10 before their lead jumped to 24, 38-14 on a lay in by Jodie Lemons.

A 9-0 run closed out the first half as Lemons hit a pair of free throws, Kaela Bellefeuil dropped in a three while Carter Williams put in the final basket with 13 seconds left. Pfeiffer couldn’t miss in the first half, shooting 55 percent from the floor and hitting 16-of-29 shots while connecting on four threes and 11 of their 14 free throw attempts.

The Falcons kept rolling in the second half as a three-point by Christina Harvey extended the lead to 37 with 14:54 to go before Cox did her own version of a three-point play to move the lead into the 40s.

The largest lead of the day came with 2:45 showing on the clock as a Caressa Samuel layup gave Pfeiffer a whopping 59-point lead at 87-28.

Pfeiffer would dominate the boards 56-37 pulling down 21 on the offensive glass. Cox led all scorers with 23 while Harvey finished with 18. Bridget Rothert would conclude with 12 points off the bench while Lemons wrapped up with 10.

As a team, the Lady Falcons would come up with 19 assists led by Kellie Rhoney and her seven. Every player would score at least one point for Pfeiffer on Saturday.

Next up will be more Conference Carolinas action as the three-game road trip continues at Queens. The 5:30 p.m. contest will be played at the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte.
