Bulldogs battle S. Davidson; Colts lose close match to CATA

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 — In recent high school wrestling action, the Albemarle varsity team went on the road to face Yadkin Valley Conference opponent South Davidson, while West Stanly travelled to Union County to take on Central Academy in a Rocky River Conference showdown.

The host Wildcats earned six forfeit wins in their matchups with the Bulldogs, taking the team event by a score of 48-24.

On the mat, Jaylyn Potter earned the only win of the match for the Bulldogs at 145 pounds with a pinfall victory over South’s Dacoda Ashe in a time of 3:53.

The Bulldogs’ two losses by pinfall came in the 126 and 220-pound matchups.

Albemarle earned three forfeit victories in the match from Quan Clark (152), Cale Gardner (170) and Chase Nicholes (285).

West Stanly at Central Academy

The Colts travelled to the Cougars on Thursday evening and fell by a slim margin as host Central Academy won by the count of 36-32.

The match started at 110 pounds, where Pavin Chunn fought to a 7-6 decision win for the Colts over Sergio Paz.

West’s Nathan Marlow won a major decision in the next match at 120 pounds 9-0 over Stephen Crooke.

After a CATA forfeit win, Ian Rogers took an 8-2 decision for the Cougars over West wrestler Ethan Morgan.

Jonathan Lord gave the Colts the lead back with a 14-6 majority decision win at 138 pounds over Josh Lemon, putting West up 11-8.

Central regained the lead with a pinfall win at 145 and a 6-4 decision at 152 pounds.

West Stanly again took the overall team lead with four straight victories, including at 160 pounds when Mark Balmas won 11-7 over Harvey Harris.

West’s Wesley Gordon pinned his opponent, CATA’s Giovanni Rubio,  in the 170-pound match to give the Colts a 20-18 team lead.

Erikcel Ramirez earned an injury default win for the Colts at 182 pounds, and Luke Alexander won for West by forfeit at 195.

Central won the final three matchups, including pinfalls at 195 and 220 pounds, as well as a forfeit at 285 pounds, to earn the victory.

    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
