West Stanly wins in extras over Parkwood; Union Academy wins over North Stanly

Thursday, March 27, 2014 — In baseball games this week, West Stanly opened Rocky River Conference play with Parkwood while North Stanly hosted Union Academy in a Yadkin Valley Conference West matchup.

West Stanly 5, Parkwood 3 (8)

The game would go to extra innings but the Colts picked up two runs in the top of the eighth inning and improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in Rocky River conference play with the win over the Rebels.

Zac Brown went the distance on the mound for West and allowed just one earned run on four hits.

The senior pitcher also helped himself out at the plate big time, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two clutch two-out hits.

Tyler Huneycutt, Cody Cline and Cooper Burgess each had a hit, and Burgess also contributed an RBI.

In the JV game, West Stanly won 8-2, with Hunter Williams getting the win on the mound and Andrew Griffin going 3-for-3 at the plate with a stolen base and two runs scored.

Union Aca. 3, North Stanly 2

The Comets entered Wednesday’s Yadkin Valley Conference West matchup with Union Academy on a five-game win streak.

In those five games, the Comets had outscored its opponents by a combined scored of 56-15, with four wins coming by six runs or more.

Union Academy took the field at North Stanly having lost four straight to start the season.

The Cardinals took the lead in the top of the fifth inning then held off a late Comets rally in the seventh to earn a 3-2 win over North.

Landon Hendrix scattered seven hits to earn the win for the Cardinals (1-4, 1-0 YVC West). He walked three and struck out four.

Will Moore pitched seven solid innings despite taking the loss for North Stanly (5-2, 1-1). He allowed two earned runs on five hits with 11 strikeouts.

Union Academy took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Chandler Musselwhite delivered a two-out triple and then scored on a John Daugherty RBI double to left-center field.

The Cardinals added an unearned run in the second inning when Robert Rushing reached on an error with one out and later scored.

North Stanly answered in the bottom of the second inning when Landon Mullis walked and the Comets got singles from Devin Wheeler and Noah Crisco to cut the Cardinals’ lead in half.

Daughtery led off the top of the fifth inning for Union Academy with a solo home run to put the Cardinals back up by two runs 3-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, Crisco led off the inning with a ground ball to third base. Daughtery’s throw to first got past the first baseman and Crisco reached second base. Moore then singled to move Crisco to third base where he then scored on a Zac Almond RBI sacrifice fly to right.

Hendrix then got a strikeout and a groundout to the pitcher to end the game.

The Comets host South Stanly tonight at 7. The game was moved up from Friday due to expected rain showers.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
