Gray Stone wins YVC West Match at Piney Point; West Stanly hosts RRC match at Red Bridge

Thursday, April 3, 2014 — In golf matches this week, Gray Stone won a Yadkin Valley Conference West golf match Tuesday at Piney Point Golf Club by one stroke, while West Stanly hosted on the teams of the Rocky River Conference Monday at Red Bridge Golf Club in Locust.

Rocky River Conference Match

Overall this season, the Colts are in a pack of three teams that are separated by three overall team points for second place behind first place Parkwood.

On a perfect day for golf with dry weather, which made for very fast conditions on the greens, the Rebels placed two individuals at the top of the leaderboard and won the overall match by 15 strokes over Forest Hills (179).

Central Academy and Mount Pleasant tied at 181, with the Tigers winning the tiebreaker for third place.

West Stanly finished fifth with a 186, followed by Monroe’s 216.

Parkwood leads the overall standings with five first place finishes for a total of five points. Central Academy is second (15), followed by West Stanly (17), Mount Pleasant (18), Forest Hills (20) and Monroe (30).

Individual honors went to Parkwood’s Ryan McManus and Braxton Sapp, who both shot rounds of 39. West’s Chance Harwood finished tied for third place one stroke back along with Mount’s A.C. Roberts.

Micah Speights finished second on the Colts’ team scores with a 46, followed by Cody Errington, James Ward and Billy Blanton, all who shot rounds of 50.

The teams have one more regular season match April 7 at Eagle Chase Golf Club in Marshville. The 18-hole Rocky River Conference tournament match will be April 29, also at Eagle Chase.

YVC West Golf Match

On Tuesday, the five squads competing in the YVC West took to the fairways of Piney Point Golf Club in Norwood in a match hosted by South Stanly.

Gray Stone took first place as a team in the match with a 168, besting Union Academy by one stroke. Albemarle took third place (181), followed by South Stanly (193) and North Stanly (215).

In the overall standings for the season, Gray Stone and Union Academy are tied at 339, followed by Albemarle (383), South Stanly (400) and North Stanly (446).

Chase Davis of Gray Stone earned individual medalist honors coming in first place with a round of 36. His teammate, Dray Smith, tied for second place at 38 with Albemarle’s Jay Andrew.

With the finish on Tuesday, Davis stays three strokes behind Andrew for the overall individual lead with Smith trailing Andrew by two strokes.

Will Casmus fired a round of 46 to finish third for Gray Stone, followed by Ryan Eudy and Josh Burris who each shot 48. Adam Habeeb shot 51 for the Knights.

William Ivey had a 41 for Albemarle, followed by Peyton Howell (44) and Samantha Holshouser (58).

Donald Poole was the low shooter for South Stanly with a 42, followed by Tanner Franklin (48), Nick Page (51), Camden Diggs (52), Sam Carpenter (55) and Alex Gresham (57). Poole is now seventh overall in the individual season standings.

Brock Faulkner had the low round for North Stanly with a 43, moving him up to 16th in the overall individual standings. Charleton Edwards shot 56 for the Comets followed by Jack Smith (57) Conner Blalock (59) and Harrison Kruis (61).
