Colts hold wrestling tutorial for public

Friday, November 23, 2012 — Spectators of the West Stanly wrestling team may have a better understanding of the team’s success this year after attending a tutorial type of parent’s meeting last Friday evening at Ridgecrest Elementary School in Locust.

Fifth year West Stanly Coach Phil DePasquale laid out all the rules, scoring system and key dates for the West Stanly team in the elementary school’s gymnasium.

Although DePasquale undoubtedly could have explained the nuances of wrestling hour after hour, the coach laid out the basics of what parents can look for next time their favorite wrestler hits the mat. He said that as the team tries to build up the culture of wrestling at West Stanly, it’s important that the parents are on board.

“It’s not something anybody grows up knowing about,” said Depasquale, who is in his fifth-year as head coach.

“These kids come in as freshman, telling their parents they want to wrestle and their parents have no idea what they are talking about.”

Knowing that the parents may be skeptical or misinformed, DePasquale laid out how to know whether their child was performing.

“So what I want to do is kind of educate the masses. So when you come watch your kids, you have a little better understanding of what they’re doing. Maybe add some appreciation to what they’re doing and make you a little more comfortable too.”

Depasquale used some of his team members to illustrate key terms, such as the fall, takedown and escape.

With more experience on this year’s team, he said parents can expect to see some exciting matches against some of the best competition available.

“I’m a firm believer that you can not be the best unless you’ve been around them, you’ve been with them. You’re just not going to wake up one day talented,” DePasquale said.

“You’ve got to be in that environment, day in and day out. And if you dodge competition, you’re never going to be successful.”

This season, West Stanly will be hosting the second annual West Stanly Duels along with the county tournament and conference tournament.

“It’s an honor to host it. I’ve always said we’re not going to host it until we’re competitive,” he said of the conference tournament.

“We’re there (competitive); it’s time.”
