Stanly County Softball Notebook

South Stanly sweeps Gray Stone in twinbill; North Stanly falls to Cuthbertson; West Stanly tops Central Cabarrus

Thursday, April 11, 2013 — In softball games this week, South Stanly hosted Gray Stone for a doubleheader, while North Stanly played host to Cuthbertson and West Stanly faced Central Cabarrus.

Tuesday’s Games

The host South Stanly Rebel Bulls swept a Yadkin Valley Conference doubleheader on Tuesday over the Knights with scores of 5-1 and 10-2.

The North Stanly varsity softball squad entered Rocky River Conference play this week having to take on the top two teams in the conference in back-to-back home games.

On Monday, the Comets rallied from a 6-0 deficit and nearly came back for a win, falling 6-5 to first-place Piedmont, North hosted Cuthbertston on a warm Tuesday evening.

The Comets again rallied after going down six runs, scoring two in the sixth inning, but could get no closer and the Cavaliers won 6-2.

The Bulldogs fell to 0-11 overall and 0-8 in the Yadkin Valley Conference with a 12-1 road loss at North Moore in five innings.

Cyrenia Chalfinch earned the win for the Mustangs while Katie Dick took the loss for the Bulldogs.

Alex Potter provided the only offense of the game for the Bulldogs in the top of the third inning with an RBI double that scored McKinley Almond from first base.

The Colts improved to 9-3 overall this season with a 4-1 non-conference home win over Central Cabarrus.

    The Stanly County 15 year-old All-Stars Babe Ruth Baseball team battled its way through the losers’ bracket after suffering a 10-9 loss to the Union County Americans to reach the championship finals.
    Stanly rallied to force a deciding third game but Union County prevailed to earn a trip to the regionals in Varina, Virginia.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
