North Stanly standout makes verbal committment

Antonio Williams commits to UNC

Tuesday, September 17, 2013 — North Stanly running back Antonio Williams announced on Monday morning that he has verbally committed to attend and play football for the North Carolina Tarheels in the fall of 2016.

“I have been thinking about it for about three weeks now,” Williams said.

“Every Sunday in church, I would ask God, ‘Where should I play?’ Every time, Carolina kept popping up. Carolina is closer to home; if something happens in my family, I can get back quick.”

Williams added that Carolina had “great coaches” and that he could get a “great education” in Chapel Hill.

“I just liked Carolina and I feel like I can succeed in everything I do (at Carolina), academically and football-wise,” Williams said.

The North Stanly sophomore currently leads Stanly County in rushing yards with 402 yards on 73 carries, averaging 5.5 yards per carry.

“Antonio is a mature young man and very sincere; I told him as a coach and as someone that cares about him that I am going to support whatever he decides to do,” North head coach Ralph Jackson said.

Antonio’s father, Keith Williams  said that Carolina is “family-oriented” and that Tarheel head coach Larry Fedora “talked about taking care of the players, taking them to church. There’s more to it than just football.”
