Blue skies, cool air, low humidity and a short course had runners busting out some fabulous times at the first of three Yadkin Valley Conference super meets hosted by North Stanly.
The Comets moved their home course from Chuck Morehead Park to their campus this year. After 144 junior varsity runners raced, the varsity girls took off.
Gray Stone’s Caroline McLeod led from start to finish to win the race with a 19:58 performance.
Four other Knights finished in the top 15 to give Gray Stone the low score of 36 points to take the victory. Union Academy placed second with 46 points. Annie Habeeb was third overall with a 20:27 run and Virginia Currie placed fourth in 21:38 for the Knights.
A total of 11 teams participated in the meet. Albemarle did not have enough runners to score as a team. North, led by Lythi Barnette’s 23:20 run and 13th place finish, took sixth place as a team. South placed eighth with 210 points.
In the boys race, the Knights took the top four spots to easily win the meet with 22 points. Dennis Collins, Josh Rolan, Reid Huckabee and David Cowan all broke the 18:00 barrier on the 2.85 mile course. They finished in 17:36, 17:40, 17:43 and 17:49 respectively.
West Montgomery took second with 71 points. Noah Lancaster led North Stanly to sixth place with his eighth place finish and 18:16 run. The Comets had 181 points. South Stanly was in ninth place with 219 points. Albemarle was 10th with 257 points.
