Head coach Jeff Morris and the Knights had fended off 11 opponents this season without having lost a match before the top-ranked Knights went on the road Monday to face No. 6 Queen’s Grant in a Yadkin Valley Conference West matchup

The only non-win a 2-2 tie to another state-ranked team in the Community School of Davidson. Since that tie, Gray Stone has won four matches in a row, including wins over Chatham Central 1-0, Albemarle 7-1 and North Stanly 9-0.

Gray Stone made it 12 matches without a defeat with a 2-0 win over the Stallions.

Sean Lavook scored six minutes into the match for the Knights (11-0-1, 4-0 YVC-West) after getting past the right back of Queen’s to the endline and slipping a shot past the Stallions’ keeper on the near post side.

The other goal in the game came in the 60th minute when John Latimer scored, assisted by Brandon Fortin, on a 25-yard shot that ricocheted off the right post into the net.

Late in the match, Queen’s Grant upped the offensive pressure, but the Knights’ defense and goalkeeper Alex Irving kept the home team off the scoreboard. Irving also had a huge save, going totally horizontal to keep the opposition scoreless.

Gray Stone travels to East Montgomery on Monday and then hosts North Moore on Wednesday.

North Stanly 1

In non-conference soccer action last Tuesday, the Colts earned their third win of the season with a 4-1 decision over North Stanly.

Senior midfielder Jordan Christy played a ball to sophomore Brady Ennis for the first goal of the night in the 14th minute.

Two minutes later senior Chandler Barbee assisted on another Brady Ennis goal, which completed the scoring for the half.

Five minutes into the second half, freshman Kalem Yang put a ball across the box from the right side and  Christy finished it for his first goal of the season and a 3-0 lead.

North answered instantly a minute and a half later with a goal to make it 3-1. The score remained that way until seven minutes left, when Chandler Barbee delivered his fifth assist on the year to Ennis, who put in his seventh goal on the season.

“We managed to put two decent halves together although we started slower than we should have. I really liked the sequences that took place in the second half, especially the ones that lead up to the two goals. Our defense had a strong night and Logan Greene’s aggressive play continues to be a positive for us in the goal,” West head coach Lee Ennis said
