Sunday, September 29, 2013 — The North Stanly Comets were currently riding a wave of success going into Friday night's game against the winless North Moore Mustangs, who came up from Robbins with hopes of knocking the Comets off of that wave for their first win of the season.

For the first time since the 2007 campaign, North Stanly had a record of 3-1 and are also near the top of the Yadkin Valley Conference standings. Last week, the Comets set a school record in scoring 64 points in their victory over South Davidson.

Prior to the contest, Comets head coach Ralph Jackson stressed the importance of striving for efficiency. Even with 105 yards in penalties and three turnovers, North Stanly played with enough efficiency for a convincing 61-7 over North Moore.

After a lovely handbell rendition of the Star Spangled Banner by the North Stanly Handbell Choir, the Comets entered the field by way of the stadium steps showing the home crowd appreciation for their support.

After a three-and-out on the Mustangs first possession, it only took the Comets just over a minutes to strike first on a 1-yard run to the house by sophomore prodigy Antonio Williams, followed by a Dylan Blalock extra point to go up 7-0. This was one of five rushing touchdowns by Williams along with his gaining 177 yards on 11 carries.

Senior utility player Lacey Riggins had a bent for the number 70. Riggins not only scored on a 70-yard kickoff return by way of a lateral at the start of the third quarter, he also scored on a 70 yard sweep from scrimmage at the 11:40 mark of the fourth frame. Freshman sensation Will Moore was rewarded for his fumble recovery by scoring on a one-yard plunge on the very next play.

The Comets’ defense also stood out Friday, especially at the 6:18 mark of the first frame, where senior defensive back Caleb Thomas picked off Mustangs quarterback Malik McCrimmon for a 54 yard pick-six, putting North up by two touchdowns.

Other efficient defensive play was given by T.J. Smith, Will Moore, Lacey Riggins, Nick Chandler, Casey Caulder and Caleb Griffin. These guys left Mustangs tailback James Bond very much in a state of being shaken and stirred. Though Bond would gain 83 yards, he was tackled for losses six times during the game. Overall, the Lumber Yard defense held North Moore to 114 total yards from scrimmage.

The Comets’ outstanding play led to a continuous clock in the final period, showing much sportsmanship on the part of the North Stanly coaching staff. Though the Comets’ second team could have scored another touchdown, they chose to run the clock out, ensuring their wave of success and efficiency with their fourth win of the 2013 season.

“The guys played hard. They played as a unit and they wanted it really badly. I am glad they are coming together,” Jackson said.

North Stanly looks to continue to ride its wave of success over to Bear Creek Friday night to face the Chatham Central Bears. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
