South Stanly ends three-game slide with win at South Davidson

Sunday, September 29, 2013 — After suffering back-to-back losses in Yadkin Valley Conference play, the South Stanly Rowdy Rebel Bulls traveled to South Davidson to face a young Wildcat team that had not won this season.

The Bulls jumped out to a two-touchdown lead early and cruised to a 64-0 win at South Davidson.

The defense for South Stanly (2-5, 2-2 YVC) dominated South Davidson (0-7, 0-5) as the Bulls did not allow a first down to the Wildcats until the final minutes of the second quarter.

South Stanly took an early 6-0 lead on a Montrell Brewer nine-yard run. A bad snap on the extra point kept the Bulls’ lead at six points.

Later in the first quarter, quarterback Luke Burris found Sawyer Lee for a 17-yard touchdown pass. Bernardo Granados’ extra point put the Bulls up 13-0.

In the second quarter, another three-and-out forced by the South Stanly defense led to a punt to Brewer, who picked up the ball off a bounce and ran 54 yards for the touchdown and a 20-0 lead.

Still in the second quarter, South Stanly got touchdown runs from Joston Horton and Cody Pope, both off of Wildcat turnovers. After a Jesse Barrett interception, Lee scored on an end around to put the Bulls up 0 with under four minutes left in the first half.

Brewer then added a four-yard touchdown run and the Rebel Bulls led at halftime 47-0.

In the third, Dakota Lewellen scored on a five-yard run to make the score 54-0.

Granados also added a late field goal for the Bulls for the game’s final score as head coach Tasker Fleming went deep into the bench in the second half.

“The last three weeks, we have gotten better,” South head coach Tasker Fleming said.

“We are not to the level of West Montgomery, but we are definitely better than we were three weeks ago. Hopefully, it will show through for the rest of the schedule.

South Stanly hosts Chatham Central (1-6, 0-4) on Friday night. The Bears will be coming off a bye week.
