Prior to this season, the Albemarle Bulldogs varsity football squad had never lost back to back games on the field since the 2007 season, when the Bulldogs lost back-to-back conference games to Mount Pleasant and Forest Hills in the Rocky River Conference.
After losing non-conference games this season to Davidson Day and Central Cabarrus, the Bulldogs avoided another set of consecutive losses in a big way with a 55-0 win over North Moore as a part of Friday’s homecoming night festivities.
Albemarle (5-3, 4-1 YVC) had its highest rushing total of the season against the Mustangs (1-8, 1-5), besting their previous season high from their win earlier this season over Chatham Central.
The Bulldogs had 382 rushing yards on 31 carries, averaging 12.3 yards per carry.
Eight different players had rushing attempts for Albemarle in the win, with senior Kevin McKinney leading the way, McKinney had 210 yards on just seven carries with four of those carries going for touchdowns. Robert Mack added 55 yards on four carries with tow touchdowns while Larry Stanback gained 44 yards on seven carries with a rushing score as well.
Through the air, senior quarterback Bryan Blanton was 5-of-11 for Albemarle for 105 yards. Timmie White hauled in two catches for 51 yards, while Rogers Brafford had two receptions. Germarcus Sellers and Andre Ridenhour also each caught a pass Friday night.
Defensively, the “Oak Tree” defense posted its fourth shutout of the season and the seventh time in nine games lifetime, all wins by Albemarle, that the Bulldogs have shut out North Moore.
Junior defensively lineman Lee Autry led the Albemarle defense with 14 tackles, while Ridenhour added 13 tackles. Autry also had the only sack in the game for the Bulldogs.
“The kids did a good job of bouncing back after a tough loss. We had a better effort of minimizing our turnovers,” Albemarle head coach Seth Smith said.
The Bulldogs travel to North Stanly this Friday night. Each team is 1-0 in the race for the Stanly Cup, both with wins this season over West Stanly.
