West Stanly loses late lead on the road at Forest Hills

Sunday, October 26, 2013 — West Stanly took to the road Friday night to face its familiar Rocky River Conference opponent, the Forest Hills Yellow Jackets on the home team's Senior Night.

With the Colts coming off of a conference victory over Central Academy last week, winning another conference game increases the Colts’ chances of going on to the postseason, which has eluded West since the 2010 season.

Prior to kickoff, a couple of West coaches commented on the importance of controlling the clock, keeping the Forest Hills offense off the field as much as possible and thwarting the big play.

For three quarters, the game plan worked very effectively for the Colts. The partisan crowd was getting antsy at the way the Colts’ offensive backfield had great success in their running game, which made for their controlling the clock and making excellent plays on defense against the Yellow Jackets offense.

It has been said that most games are won in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Colts, this was where they experienced shortcomings in stopping the big play.

Forest Hills senior quarterback Jared Lee overcame a bell-ringing sack by B.J. Hill earlier to become a human highlight reel in the final 10 minutes of the contest, scoring the game’s final two touchdowns, resulting in the Forest Hills comeback win over West Stanly 29-20.

The game started off with Forest Hills scoring on its first possession on a third-and-17 where quarterback Lee threw a 17-yard strike to Jaiquan Davis at the 8:30 mark of the first.

West Stanly immediately matched the score with Blaine Long running through the Forest Hills kickoff team for an 82 yard return, making the score 6-6.

The Colts ruled the second and third periods with a Matt Price to Taylan Rowe eight yard slant route to the end zone putting them up at 13-6 early in the second. Colts defensive back Trey Barbee was also a spotlight player, picking off two Yellow Jackets passes preserving the West lead at halftime.

West then scored on their first possession in the third period on a two yard charge by Ryan McCormick followed by another Brady Ennis extra point increasing the Colts lead at 20-6.

The Colts also showed agressiveness in their offensive play calling in the third quarter, including one series of plays from their own one yard line and going for it on a 4th and inches from the West 23-yard line.

In the fourth quarter, Colts quarterback Price was sacked for a 13 yard loss, forcing West to punt at the 10:40 mark.

From there, on a second and four from the Colts 39, the Yellow Jackets B.J. Ashcraft ran an off-tackle right to the end zone, cutting the West lead at 20-14.

On their next possession, West was moving the football successfully again until a fumble with 7:17 left in the game, turning the ball over to the Yellow Jackets at their own 41.

Two plays later, Yellow Jackets quarterback Lee sprinted directly up the middle for 50 yards to the house followed by a Geo Puente extra point, putting Forest Hills up 21-20 with 6:28 left to go in the game.

On their next series, the Colts turned the ball over on downs at the 4:54 mark at their own 42. Five plays later, Lee scored on a three yard run sealing the Forest Hills come from behind victory.

Colts running backs Hill and McCormick had outstanding performances in their combining for 189 yards. Quarterback Price also posted decent numbers completing about 60 percent of his passes. The loss leaves West Stanly with an overall 2-7 record and 1-2 in the Rocky River Conference.

West Stanly has another conference matchup at home against the Monroe Redhawks on Friday. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
