North Stanly teams beat Queen's Grant, Gray Stone; South Stanly girls get first win of the season

Monday, December 23, 2013 — The North Stanly Comets varsity basketball squads earned victories this week in Yadkin Valley Conference West games as both the girls’ and boys’s teams won Tuesday at Queen’s Grant and Friday at home against Gray Stone.

Also, the South Stanly girls’ basketball squad earned their first win of the season this week in a non-conference game Thursday at home versus Mount Pleasant.

Friday’s Games


North Stanly 60

The North Stanly Comets are off to one of the team’s best starts in recent history.

Since 2008-09, the Comets have not had a winning season, nor has North posted more than nine wins in a season in that span.

With a 24-point home win over visiting Gray Stone on Friday night, the Comets are 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in the new Yadkin Valley Conference West division.

The Comets got a balanced effort Friday night as seven different players had at least six points in the game. Zac Almond led North with nine points, while A.J. Atkins, Luke Gibson, Stephen Misenheimer and Dangelo Reid all added eight points each.

Early full-court defensive pressure helped the Comets break out to a fast start over the Knights (1-8, 1-2).

“It’s good to get guys minutes that do not get to play all the time,” North head coach Chris Misenheimer said.

The Comets will next play in the Tiger Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament presented by Brickhouse on Thursday. North Stanly plays at 8 p.m. against Covenant Classical, then will have games on Friday and Saturday as well.

Gray Stone will play in a holiday tournament at home against the Community School of Davidson on Dec. 30.

Queen’s Grant 58

South Stanly 40

The South Stanly boys suffered an 18-point loss on Friday night at home to Queen’s Grant. dropping the Bulls to 0-7 this season and 0-2 in the West division of the Yadkin Valley Conference.

South Stanly will have a rematch with Mount Pleasant on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the opening round of the Tiger Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament at Mount Pleasant. The Bulls will also then have games on Friday and Saturday.


North Stanly 48

Gray Stone 40

The Comet girls improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the West division of the Yadkin Valley Conference with an eight-point home win over Gray Stone (4-5, 2-1).

Gentry Grubb led the Comets with 19 points as the senior guard knocked down four shots in the game and was 11-of-14 at the free-throw line. Grubb also led North with seven rebounds in the game.

Aaliyah Scott added 11 points including 5-of-6 at the foul line for North Stanly.

Weslyn Almond led the Comets with five assists, and Dana Beadle had six rebounds and four steals for North.

Erin Ansbro led the Knights with 14 points.

The Comets will be off until Jan. 7 when North hosts Union Academy.

Gray Stone will host a New Year’s tournament on Dec. 30 and 31.

Mount Pleasant 50

South Stanly ended a six-game losing streak that started the season out for the Bulls with a 66-50 non-conference win on Thursday at home against Mount Pleasant.

Chelsey Culp and Ashlyn Whitley led the Bulls (1-6) with 19 points each. Taylor Rinehardt led the Tigers (0-9) with 15 points and Jordan Coley added 11.

Both teams shot a high number of free throws in the game. South Stanly was 21-of-34 from the line (62 percent while the Tigers were 17-of-28 (61 percent) from the line.

Despite being without starting forward Dylan Blalock, out with the flu, the Comets earned a four-point road win over the Stallions.

“Zac (Almond) stepped up and played big minutes; he’s getting better every game,” North head coach Chris Misenheimer said, also crediting A.J. Atkins with having been “tremendous” on defense.
