West Stanly baseball loses at East Davidson

Tuesday, May 27, 2014 — Ryan McIntire posted a complete game shutout on the mound for East Davidson and the Golden Eagles scored four runs over the first two innings to defeat West Stanly 4-0 in the quarterfinal round of the NCHSAA 2A baseball state playoffs.

The East Davidson junior right-hander scattered four hits and struck out 11 Colts over his seven innings of work in picking up the victory.

West junior lefty Hunter Martin took the loss on the mound for the Colts (21-7), while giving up only five hits and three earned runs through six inning and striking out six Golden Eagles.

McIntire worked out of an early jam in the top of the first inning, getting a two-out strikeout to strand Colt runners on first and third. The Golden Eagles then got all the offense they needed in the bottom of the frame when senior catcher Nathan Campbell provided a two-run homer over the leftfield wall.

East Davidson added two more runs in the second inning, each coming with two outs to round out the scoring on the night. Martin only allowed three Golden Eagles to reach base over his final four innings on the mound.

Martin led off the third inning with a base hit, but he was stranded on base as McIntire recorded six consecutive outs. Cooper Burgess and Damon Smith each provided singles to begin the fifth and sixth innings, but each was caught stealing during their respective innings.

In addition to Pfeiffer baseball signee Smith, who went 2-for-3 in the game, fellow seniors Trey Barbee, Zac Brown and Baron Whitley also played their final game for West Stanly.

The four players contributed to an impressive turnaround this season for the green and gold.  After finishing a combined 18-29 as sophomores and juniors on the varsity squad, the quartet led West a 20-win season and to the program’s first state quarterfinal appearance since 2004.

“I’m extremely proud of the leadership our four seniors provided this season in leading this team to 21 wins, a conference tournament championship and to the fourth round of the state playoffs,” first-year West Stanly head coach Chad Yow said.

“They will be greatly missed, but each has certainly left his mark on West Stanly baseball.”
