Stanly County Post 76 seniors lose at Rowan County

Thursday, June 19, 2014 — The recent history of the Stanly County American Legion senior baseball team in games at Newman Park against Rowan County has been one of limited success.

Since 2009, the Post 76 squad is 2-5 in games at Newman Park, with regular season wins coming in 2010 and 2012.

Intermittent weather problems broke up Tuesday’s game at Newman Park on the Catawba campus into two different games as Stanly looked for its second win this season in play in the Southeast Division of Area III American Legion baseball.

What started as a battle between two hard-throwing southpaws became a rough fielding night for Stanly County in a 12-2 loss in eight innings.

Stanly (6-11, 1-1 SE Div.) committed seven errors in the game and only five of the 12 runs scored by Rowan (10-4, 1-0) were earned.

The starting pitching matchup was Stanly’s Russ Weiker, who played his freshman season in college this year at Liberty, versus a pitcher bound for East Carolina in the fall, Rowan starter Connor Johnson.

Both pitchers fought out of trouble in the first two innings, then the game was halted due to lightning for well over an hour before play resumed.

In the bottom of the third, Rowan took advantage of four walks from reliever Justin Crump and two fielding errors to score four runs, including a wild pitch sequence that cleared a bases-loaded situation and scored three of Rowan’s four runs.

Harrison Baucom, who led Rowan going 4-for-4, had an RBI triple in a two-run fourth, then added two more with a single in the fifth.

Stanly’s two runs came on one swing of Zac Almond’s bat as the future UNC-Greensboro Spartan crushed a fastball deep over the fence in left field.

Stanly’s next game will be at home on Friday against divisional opponent Concord. Post 76 has won two of three games over Concord this season, including a 4-1 win at Post 51 in divisional play.

Pulling into Charlotte Motor Speedway, the first thing one may think about is getting in one of those really fast cars and taking a spin around the track.
Cracking the motor, hearing the roar, tearing down the front stretch at 200 mph with numerous other cars doing the same. The rush, excitement and adrenaline pumping all while maintaining focus and poise as you power the aggressive vehicle around the track.
