North Stanly basketball opens with split versus South Davidson

Sunday, November 24, 2013 — The North Stanly Comets opened the 2013-14 high school basketball season on Tuesday night with a home date with South Davidson in a game between two teams in opposite subdivisions of the Yadkin Valley Conference.

North Stanly will travel to East Montgomery on Tuesday.

North Stanly’s first contest as a 1A team saw the Comets get a strong effort from their senior shooting guard but the visiting Wildcats’ defense limited the Comets’ chances in a 55-34 loss for North.

Grubb led North (0-1) with 18 points on 6-of-21 shooting from the field. As a team, the Comets were 11-of-61 from the field (18 percent), including 3-of-27 from the three-point arc.

South Davidson (1-0) was 21-of-57 from the floor (37 percent) and was led by Anna Gardner. The freshman had 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting.

Another freshman, Hannah Luellen, added 13 points and 10 rebounds, hitting a perfect 5-for-5 at the free-throw line.

The Wildcats outrebounded North 45-27 but North outshot South Davidson at the free-throw line. South hit 9-of-21 (43 percent) at the line while North was 9-of-16 (56 percent).

“Ice cold shooting and a lack of experience on defense was way too much for us to overcome this early in the season. The girls were disappointed but not discouraged and will continue to work hard and improve,” North head coach Greg Speight said.

The Comets took to the hardwood on Tuesday night missing several players that are still practicing on the football field located just a stone’s throw from L.R. Chandler Gymnasium.

North got a huge night from sophomore Stephen Misenheimer as the Comets put together a big second half for a 66-45 home win.

Misenheimer led North (1-0) with 33 points and made it a double-double with 15 rebounds.

Comet point guard A.J. Atkins also had a double-double for North with 19 points and 10 assists.

Davin Ball led the Wildcats (0-1) with 16 points while Trent Shore added 11.

“After first-quarter jitters, we settled in and played team ball in the second half,” North head coach Chris Misenheimer said.

The North coach also credited Atkins for his efforts on defense that helped create turnovers as well as Misenheimer’s rebounding efforts. He also talked about the development of players like Luke Gibson and Dangelo Reid, who Misenheimer said “worked hard all offseason and it shows.”

The win for North Stanly was the first season-opening win for the Comets since the 2009-10 season when North topped Gray Stone 71-53.

    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
