Stanly County Softball Notebook

Gray Stone extends win streak to five games; South Stanly earns victories; West Stanly loses two RRC games

Sunday, March 24, 2013 — In a busy week of high school softball games for the varsity squads of Stanly County, Gray Stone built a winning streak, while West Stanly suffered two Rocky River Conference losses and North Stanly had two games postponed this week.

Tuesday’s Games

Piedmont 4

West Stanly 2

The Colts saw their four-game win streak stopped on Tuesday with a 4-2 road loss at Piedmont.

South Stanly 8

North Rowan 2

The Rebel Bulls got a big offensive punch in the third inning enroute to an 8-2 win Tuesday at North Rowan.

Kayla Smith led at the plate for the Bulls, going 3-4 and scoring two runs, while Steely Russell added a triple and three RBIs for South. Chelsey Culp also added an RBI double for the Bulls as well.

Wednesday’s Games

Gray Stone 11

Mount Pleasant 4

After opening the season with three losses in a row, the Gray Stone Knights varsity softball team earned two conference wins last week over North Rowan (14-4) and South Davidson (3-2).

The Knights entered this week with three games in as many days, starting with a non-conference tilt Wednesday at Mount Pleasant.

A huge second-inning score led the Knights to their third straight win in an 11-4 victory over the Tigers.

North Moore 17

Albemarle 6

The Bulldogs fell to 0-4 in conference play with a loss to North Moore.

After the Mustangs jumped out to a 5-0 lead, Alex Potter delivered a grand slam for Albemarle, with Tiffani Currie eventually scoring on a passed ball to tie the game 5-5 in the first inning. The Mustangs outscored Albemarle 12-1 over the next three innings enroute to the win.

Thursday’s Games

Albemarle 1

The Knights returned to Yadkin Valley Conference play in a big way with a 19-1 five-inning win over Albemarle at Rock Creek Park.

West Stanly fell to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the Rocky River Conference with an 11-0 five-inning loss at Cuthbert-son on Thursday.

    The Stanly County 15 year-old All-Stars Babe Ruth Baseball team battled its way through the losers’ bracket after suffering a 10-9 loss to the Union County Americans to reach the championship finals.
    Stanly rallied to force a deciding third game but Union County prevailed to earn a trip to the regionals in Varina, Virginia.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
