Gray Stone 6
For the first time in the 10-year history of the school, the Gray Stone boys’ tennis team won the Yadkin Valley Conference regular-season title with a 6-3 win over Albemarle.
The Knights finish the season with a perfect 14-0 overall record.
Head coach Jeff Walter talked about his team winning the first boys’ tennis title in school history.
“The first conference championship is special. I never would have guessed it. We lost three of our top six to start this season, but we got better as the season progressed and are playing our best tennis at the right time,” Walter said.
The Gray Stone coach also talked about his team’s improved marks in tiebreaker finishes as the Knights won four tiebreakers at CATA on Monday and two tiebreaker victories against the Bulldogs.
Albemarle (14-4) finished second in the YVC and will have the No. 2 seed going into the dual team tennis playoffs which open this Tuesday.
Both the Bulldogs and the No. 1-seeded Knights will likely have home matches.
