West Stanly sweeps doubleheader; Gray Stone wins at South Davidson; North Stanly beats Albemarle in four innings

Thursday, April 10, 2014 — In high school softball games this week, West Stanly hosted both Central Academy and Northwest Cabarrus in a doubleheader, while Gray Stone traveled to South Davidson and North Stanly traveled to Rock Creek Park to take on Albemarle.

Wednesday’s Games

West Stanly 4, NW Cabarrus 3

In the second game of the twinbill, the host Colts were in a situation that has been more the exception than the rule this season: trailing on the scoreboard.

West Stanly did not lead the Northwest Cabarrus Trojans until the final swing of the bat when Brennan Broadaway drove in Maddie Brown from second base with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel the Colts to a 4-3 win.

Broadaway earned the win for West (12-4) on the mound, allowing two earned runs on three hits.

Abby Peterson put the Trojans up 1-0 in the first inning with an RBI single, then  made it 2-0 in the second inning with an RBI groundout from Madison Webb.

In the bottom of the third, Brown laced a single to right and the throw home went over the catcher’s head, allowing Payton Halliman to score.

Northwest added another run in the top of the fourth, but Abby Pate answered for West in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run to left field.

In the bottom of the seventh, Brown reached second base on a fielding error in the outfield and scored on Broadaway’s walkoff single for the win, West’s ninth straight victory.
