Stanly County Baseball Notebook

Thursday, April 17, 2014 — In high school baseball games this week, West Stanly faced a non-conference matchup before two critical Rocky River Conferene games, while Albemarle also ventured out of conference play with a home game against West Montgomery.

Monday’s Game

Albemarle 3, West Montgomery 0

The Bulldogs improved to 12-3 overall this season and won for the sixth time in seven outings with a shutout home win Monday over the Warriors.

Andre Ridenhour earned the complete-game win for the Bulldogs and scattered five hits while striking out six batters to earn his first pitching victory of the season in his third appearance on the mound.

Zach Brafford and Holden Davis each had RBIs in a three-run bottom of the fourth inning that proved to be the difference in the game. Bryan Blanton, K.J. McKinney and Hunter Davis all had hits as well, with Brafford, Blanton and Justin Crump scoring the runs in the win.

With the victory, Albemarle is one win shy of the team’s win record last season’s mark of 13.

Albemarle travels to South Stanly tonight with first place in the Yadkin Valley Conference West standings on the line.

West Stanly 4

Northwest Cabarrus 1

In a home non-conference matchup on Monday night, West Stanly improved to 11-3 overall this season and earned the Colts’ fifth win in six games with a 4-1 win over the Northwest Cabarrus Trojans.

Cooper Burgess earned the win on the mound for West Stanly in five innings of work, allowing no earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Chris Herrin earned the save for the Colts by pitching the final two innings, striking out three and allowing no hits.

Zac Brown and Will Smith were each 2-for-3 on the night. Brown had a double, an RBI and scored twice, while Smith had an RBI. Cody Cline, Carson Davis and Damon Smith also each had hits for West Stanly.

The Colts are scheduled to play at Mount Pleasant tonight. West Stanly then hosts the Tigers on Friday.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
