Lady Lions claim fourth straight CACAA title; boys improve to 16-9

Wednesday, February 13, 2013 — On Friday night, the high school basketball teams of Carolina Christian School in Locust held Senior Night when the Lions hosted the Wildcats from First Assembly of Monroe.

The Lions girls’ and boys’ teams travel to the Cramerton Christian Invitational next Friday and Saturday before heading into their conference tournaments the following week.

On a night dedicated to honor seniors, the Lady Lions were led by four year starter at point guard Sarah Grigg as they trounced the Wildcats 77-15.  Grigg tallied four three-pointers on her way to a career high 19 points.

She was joined by three other starters in double figures. Chloe Burris had 16 and a game high 9 rebounds, Ashton Franklin had 14 and Kaydi Pinion added 11.

With the win, the Lady Lions move to 20-1 on the season and wrapped up their fourth consecutive Charlotte Area Christian Athletic Association regular season championship.

“Sarah has been a tremendous player for our program. It was nice to see her have such an outstanding performance on a night to honor our seniors,” CCS head coach Randy Burris said.

In the men's contest Carolina Christian continued their late season surge, pounding the Wildcats 88-46. Steven Carr, the Lions’ lone senior, turned in a performance to remember. Carr had 21 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals in an outstanding all around outing.

Will Player led four other Lions in double figures with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Luke Moore, Josh Martin and James Martin scored 11 each.

Carolina Christian moves to 16-9 on the season and have won six of the their last eight contests.

“Steven turned in one of the best all around games in our programs history tonight. The young man left it all on the floor,” CCS head coach Marcus Dilligard said.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
