You have to admit when you were less than right

Thursday, February 14, 2013 — A few more random items today, from changing opinions to Valentine’s Day to wrestling with an opinion that seems to be the majority from most traditional Olympic fans everywhere.

– Maybe I was a little hasty and a bit obstructionist when I wrote in 2008 that UNC-Charlotte did not need a football program.

I felt that it could take away from recruiting from established Div. II programs like Catawba and Wingate, as well as not be able to generate interest

It is obvious from the fan fervor and the sale of 5,000 permanent seat licenses that the students and alumni wanted football.

The majority of students even voted in an online poll that they would agree to student fee increases to offset the costs of football.

Besides, two of Stanly’s best football standouts in the past couple of years, Jalen Holt and Jordan Starnes, will be playing next year for the 49ers.

UNC-Charlotte and their new football team will play at McColl-Richardson Field on the Charlotte campus in the fall of this year in the Football Championship Series division of the NCAA. The 49ers will play two years in FCS before joining the Conference USA  football ranks in 2015.

– Considering the passion and drive that I have seen in the faces of young high school wrestlers in Stanly County, I can’t fathom how the International Olympic Committee could ever vote to drop wrestling from the Olympics.

Wrestling is an original Olympic sport and had more than 70 countries represented in London last year, while sports like the modern pentathalon had just 26 countries.

I’m not an expert on Olympic sports, but it is common knowledge that wrestling dates back to the ancient games, while modern pentathalon was created in 1912 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the creator of the modern games.

It’s safe to say that there are more young athletes wrestling worldwide then participating in the other sports that the Olympics are dropping in 2020 like squash, roller sports or wakeboarding.

– Enjoy Valentine’s Day with someone that you love; if you listen hard enough, you might hear Lionel Richie’s “Stuck On You” sung karaoke-style somewhere locally by me to my beautiful wife Laura.
