Uwharrie Bobcats reform, sweep Asheboro in doubleheader

Thursday, June 26, 2014 — After competing for several seasons in the 65-and-over level, the Uwharrie Bobcats adult softball program has gone through some changes this season.

The Bobcats will now compete in the state games at the 70-and-over softball division.

This season, Uwharrie will compete in the Piedmont Senior Softball League against teams from Asheboro, Burlington, Salisbury and Pinehurst, most of which are 65-and-over.

The most recent home games for the Bobcats were on June 14, when Uwharrie hosted the 65-and-over Asheboro squad at Rock Creek Park for a doubleheader.

Bobcats 9, Asheboro 8

Asheboro took a two-run lead in the top of the first inning, but Uwharrie’s Ron Janey and Moody Lemons tied the game in the bottom of the inning when they scored in front of a hit from Martin Efird.

The visitors countered with two more runs to lead 4-2 in the top of the second.

Oscar Shelton scored for the Bobcats in the bottom half with help from hits by Earle Trulove and Ed Huneycutt, making the score 4-3.

In the bottom of the third, Robert Huneycutt and Lemons crossed the plate for the Bobcats in front of a hit from Larry Coble, moving the score to 5-4 Bobcats.

Asheboro took a 6-5 lead when the team scored twice in the top of the fourth and extended its lead in the fifth with an additional run.

The visitors led 8-5 in the sixth before Uwharrie responded in the bottom of the inning. Lemons hit a triple with Robert Huneycutt on base for the Bobcats to pull within two runs.

The Bobcats’ defense held Asheboro scoreless in the top of the seventh inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Bobcats earned a 9-8 victory when Shelton reached first, Trulove followed and Ed Huneycutt both doubled, John Smith walked, Chesley Greene reached base with a single, and Janey hit a sacrifice to bring home the winning run.

The Bobcats’ bats erupted in the top of the first inning. Robert Huneycutt singled, Moody Lemons singled, Larry Coble walked, Martin Efird singled, Ron Crawley doubled, Oscar Shelton walked and Earl Trulove singled resulting in a five-run inning.

Not to be outdone, Asheboro came back with five runs in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at 5-5.

The Bobcats pushed the lead to 9-5 in the top of the second with four runs, including a triple by John Smith, a single by Chesley Greene, another single by Robert Huneycutt and a homerun from Moody Lemons.

In the top of the third, the Bobcats added five more runs when Efird, Crawley, Shelton, Turlove, Ed Huneycutt, Don Barndhart, and Chesley Greene hit a string of singles.

Asheboro added a run to move the score to 14-6, which is where the score stayed after a scoreless fourth inning by both ball clubs.

The Bobcats added five more runs in the top of the fifth. Trulove hit a single and Ed Huneycutt hit a triple to score Trulove. Smith, Barnhardt, Greene, Janey, Robert Huneycutt and Lemons each singled to finish the five-run scoring.

After Asheboro did not score in the fifth, the Bobcats’ lead moved to 20-6 in the sixth when Efird tripled and Crawley pushed the run in with a double.

Asheboro narrowed the gap slightly in the bottom of the sixth with two runs to make the score 20-8.

Ed Huneycutt and Greene scored for the Bobcats in the top of the seventh in front of hits by Smith, Barnhardt and Janey moving the score to 22-8.

Asheboro fought back with five runs in the bottom of the inning but the rally fell short, giving Uwharrie the win.

With the wins, Uwharrie improves to 7-8 on the season.
