Weather forces changes to local basketball schedules, tournaments

Sunday, February 16, 2014 — With the wintry weather that Stanly County and North Carolina have endured the past several days, changes have been made to both the high school team’s schedules and the upcoming conference tournaments.

Yadkin Valley

Conference West

The highly-anticipated rematch between the varsity basketball teams of North Stanly and Albemarle orginially scheduled for Valentine’s Day will now be Monday at Albemarle.

The Bulldog boys’ squad is a game ahead of the Comets for first place in the conference, while the girls’ teams of Albemarle and North Stanly are tied for first place.

Also on Monday, South Stanly travels to Gray Stone.

Tuesday’s games will see North Stanly travel to South Stanly, Albemarle hosts Queen’s Grant and Gray Stone hosts Union Academy.

With the NCHSAA approving teams to play four times this week, the YVC West tournament will likely become a four-team event this week, with games starting at 5:30 p.m. at North Stanly.

The finals of the tournament will be held inside Merner Gym on the Pfeiffer University campus Friday night, with the girls’ title game at 5:30 p.m. and the boys’ game at 7.

Rocky River

West Stanly wraps up their regular season Monday with games at Mount Pleasant.

The tournament will start Tuesday, with the number-four seeded Colt girls playing at 4 p.m. against No. 5 seed Central Academy. The winner of Monday’s Forest Hills - Monroe girls’ game earns the second seed and a first-round bye in the conference tournament.

The West boys’ squad will play either Central Academy or Forest Hills at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, depending on how the two teams finish. A Cougars win and a Jacket loss would put the two teams at 6-4 in conference this season, a tiebreaker. The two teams split their head-to-head matchups.

One conference regular-season game, the second matchup between Parkwood and Mount Pleasant, will not be played.

According to the bylaws of the RRC, the standings will be based on win percentages for the fourth and fifth seeds.

Cracking the motor, hearing the roar, tearing down the front stretch at 200 mph with numerous other cars doing the same. The rush, excitement and adrenaline pumping all while maintaining focus and poise as you power the aggressive vehicle around the track.
