The last season that the senior American Legion baseball team from Stanly County reached the third round of the playoffs was in the 2006 season.
That year, Stanly swept Concord and South Rowan in three straight games each before losing in five games to Randolph County Post 45, whom this year awaits the winner of this series.
With a 14-3 win in seven innings Friday night at Lake Norman High School, Post 76 stood on the precipice of that accomplishment heading into a doubleheader on Saturday.
Carson Sells was solid on the mound for Stanly (16-11), allowing one earned run over his first six innings of work before coming out of the game in the seventh. Heath Blackmon came on in relief to close out the game.
Jon Stires took the loss for Mooresville (17-10), allowing five earned runs on nine hits in six innings. Ryan James and Aaron Harr each allowed four earned runs in one combined inning for Post 66.
