West Stanly summer squad stretches win streak to four before losses to Cuthbertson

Sunday, June 29, 2014 — The West Stanly baseball team playing in the high-school level Central Carolina Scholastic Summer League returned to action with a road game at Anson County Monday and a home doubleheader Tuesday with Cuthbertson.

West stretched the team’s win streak to start the season to four games with a 13-6 win over Anson, but lost both games of the home twinbill.

Chris Herrin again picked up the win on the mound for West Stanly in a seven-run win over Anson.

Herrin went 4.2 innings and allowed no runs on two hits with eight strikeouts.

Carson Davis, Hunter Doby and Herrin had two hits each for West, while Seth Grice and Cody Cline each contributed a hit and two RBIs. West Stanly racked up 14 hits in the win.

Through the first four games, Daniel Efird led West with nine hits, four doubles, a home run and a .642 batting average. Cameron Harman had six hits in eight at-bats. As a team, West scored 50 runs in four games and hit .376 overall.

On the pitching side, Hunter Martin had a 1-0 record with a 1.75 ERA, while Herrin was 2-0 with a 0.85 earned run average.

Cuthbertson 5-4, West Stanly 0-2

The Colts suffered the team’s first losses of the 2014 summer season at home Tuesday to Cuthbertson in a doubleheader with scores of 5-0 and 4-2.

Daniel Efird led the effort at the plate for West (4-2) going 2-for-5 with a double. Cody Cline, Eric Huneycutt, Harrison Flowe, Hunter Martin and Will Smith each had hits for West Stanly.

The locals return to action this week with a home-at-home series against Pinecrest. West Stanly travels to Pinecrest on Monday and returns home Tuesday.

West then has back to back home games July 10 and 11 against Richmond County and Carrboro, respectively.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
