Stanly County loses wild road game at Southern Rowan 13-12

Thursday, July 3, 2014 — In a wild back-and forth contest, the Stanly County American Legion senior baseball team lost a hotly contested game two of their playoff series at Southern Rowan by one run, 13-12.

Ben Gragg earned the win in relief for Southern Rowan (9-11) while David Singletary took the loss for Stanly (10-15), allowing one earned run in three innings of relief with one walk and one strikeout.

Five errors in the first three innings, along with RBI singles from Zac Almond and Vance Deese, helped

Stanly build a 6-0 advantage through three innings.

Post 76 nearly lost Singletary before he could come in relief in the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, Singletary, then at first base, had to tag out Colton Laws on a routine ground out to second. The two collided, sending Singletary down to the ground after contact was made to the Stanly first baseman’s head.

Southern then scored five times inthe fourth, off a Dylan Atwell RBI single, two bases-loaded walks and a

Gragg two-RBI single.

A six-run sixth inning off three different Stanly pitchers, including two unearned runs, gave Southern Rowan an 11-6 lead.

Post 76 started slowly rallying with two runs in the seventh off a Bryan Blanton RBI double and a Chase

Davis RBI single.

After Southern got one run back in the seventh, Stanly pulled to within a run, 12-11, with three runs in the

eighth. Almond led off the inning with a solo home run and Davis scored two more runs with a single.

The ninth inning saw Stanly pull into a tie with Southern after both Deese and head coach Derek Barringer were ejected in the frame. Almond singled and later scored on a dropped third strike as the throw back from first base was not in time. Gragg then struck out the next batter to keep the game tied headed to the last of the ninth.

Gragg led off the ninth with a double, moving to second on a fielder’s choice on Dylan Carpenter’s bunt. Matt Honeycutt then moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt and Labbe was intentionally walked to load the bases. Laws then was hit by a pitch from Russ Weiker with the bases loaded to end the game.

“It was kind of like two games,” Barringer said.

“First five innings, we were cruising and scoring runs, then they had that big inning that threw us off. Bottom line is, we have to stay out of big innings.”

Barringer also talked about Almond and Davis’ night at the plate.

“They both swing it well,” Barringer said.

“Holden was really clutch with his hit in the eighth inning that got us back in the game.”
