Stanly County softball standouts earn All-District, All-State honors

Tuesday, July 8, 2014 — The North Carolina Softball Coaches Association has released its selections for the 2014 All-District and All-State selections for high school softball.

A number of those award winners played softball this season for high school programs in Stanly County.

2A All-District / All State

Five West Stanly players were named to the 2A All-District selection from District 6, which included Stanly, Anson, Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan and Union counties.

Senior second baseman Samantha Lowder, sophomores Walker Barbee (C), Brennan Broadaway (P/SS) and Maddie Brown (CF), along with freshman shortstop Abby Pate all received nominations.

Broadaway also earned the District 6 2A Co-Pitcher of the Year award along with West Lincoln’s Cassidy Wise.

All five of the aforementioned West Stanly players were also named to the 2A All-State team as well.

1A All-District and All-State

A total of 10 players from Stanly schools were named to the 2014 1A District 6 team.

Gray Stone had two representatives on the All-District team: pitcher/outfielder Sydney Freeman and shortstop/third baseman Jordan Orick.

Four North Stanly players were named All-District, including sophomore Heidi Smith (C/3B) and freshman Weslyn Almond (SS/3B), Alexa Sells (C/1B) and Samantha Hogan (P/3B). Hogan was also named the 1A All-District Pitcher of the Year.

Two seniors, Haley Carpenter (CF) and Sarah Bennett (P/3B), junior Chelsea Culp (SS) and freshman Sara Beth Thomas (RF/P) represented South Stanly.

All of the players representing Stanly County that received All-District honors were all also named to the 2A All-State team.
