Post 76 senior squad opens divisional play with win

Sunday, June 15, 2014 — The Stanly County American Legion senior baseball team continued the team’s 2014 schedule with four games scheduled in four nights.

After losing two games on the road, one shortened by rain, Post 76 opened divisional play on Thursday on the road at Post 51 Concord.

Stanly County 4, Concord 1

The locals got a strong pitching performance from the team’s starter and the bullpen while taking an early lead enroute to a 4-1 win.

Russ Weiker pitched 7.2 innings of scoreless baseball and got the win for Stanly County (6-10, 1-0 div.). Matt Lambert earned the save in relief in the ninth inning.

Derek Tucker put Stanly up two runs in the top of the first inning, scoring Rusty Brown and Zac Almond with a single.

Stanly added another run in the top of the third inning. Brown walked and later scored on an RBI groundout from Vance Deese to put the visitors up 3-0.

Post 76 added another run in the top of the eighth inning. Almond led off with a double to center field and later scored on an error for a 4-0 advantage.

Concord (6-7, 0-1) rallied for an unearned run in the top of the ninth, but Lambert came on and got a fielder’s choice and a strikeout to end the game.

Lambert also had the only multi-hit game of anyone on Thursday, going 2-for-4.

Weiker, Justin Crump and Lambert combined for Stanly to allow no earned runs on just two hits. Weiker also had eight strikeouts for Post 76, while Crump struck out two in .2 innings.

Post 76 then travels to Northwest Cabarrus High School on Wednesday for a road game with Kannapolis.

Stanly then starts a four-game home stand on Friday with a rematch against Concord.
