Badin hosts annual Triathlon competition

Tuesday, June 17, 2014 — Fifty-eight triathletes and 14 teams from the North Carolina region traveled to Stanly County  on Saturday to compete in the Vac & Dash and Uwharrie Running Club 2014 Badin Lake Triathlon.

“The Badin Lake Triathlon is a great way to bring new people into Stanly County,” Vac & Dash owner Peter Asciutto said.

“We were pleased to have nine regional YMCAs represented at the event as well as 35 cities from across the state.”

The triathlon consisted of a 750-yard swim in Badin Lake, a 13.5-mile bike course and a 5K run through Badin.

With the addition of the Stanly County YMCA to the triathlon, also added was a Relay Team Challenge, which consisted of teams of three and were for individuals throughout the community who were not prepared for a complete triathlon. Each team included a swimmer, runner and cyclist.

Race director Kassie Taylor said the YMCA wanted to give Stanly County a taste of what it is like to be part of a triathlon.

“It is a great way to get more people involved in a triathlon and encourage individuals to think about doing the whole event in the future,” Taylor said.

The YMCA also offered triathlon classes to prepare for the event. The Tri 101 course began in February and lasted up until the race. The class focused on swimming, cycling and running skills.

Tri 101 instructor Kelly Caudle felt the class definitely prepared individuals for the race.

Thomas Revelle of Carrboro took first place in the male division in 1:18:24.

Roxanne Purvis of Bunnlevel was tops in the Female Division with a time of 1:26:06.

Four-year veteran Derek Blalock of Albemarle finished third overall with a time of 1:21:27.

“I had a pretty good swim and OK bike,” Blalock said.

A second behind Blalock was Lee Allen of Albemarle with a time of 1:21:28. Allen, who had been training for a big race, said he swims twice a week, bikes four days a week and runs five days a week.

Allen said he, Taylor and Asciutto plan to take this event to the next level.

“We want to take this event until (it’s) a large event, like 600 people,” Allen said.

The proceeds of the event went to the YMCA’s six signature outreach programs, with $3,000 being raised by event registration to support the Y.
