Stanly County seniors rally for 10th inning victory

Sunday, June 22, 2014 — The Post 76 senior baseball team showed resiliency in a crucial home win Friday night in extra innings over Concord, rallying to send the game to an extra frame then win 13-12.

Russ Weiker earned the win in relief for Stanly (7-11, 2-0 div.) while Nick Coble lost in relief for Concord (6-8, 0-2).

Concord built a 4-0 lead through the first two innings before Stanly rallied for five runs in the third inning. Freshman Holden Davis’ two-RBI single gave Stanly a 5-4 lead.

Post 51 rallied to lead 9-5 through five, but Stanly pulled to within a run in the seventh.

Trailing 11-8 in the ninth, Rusty Brown drove in Bryan Blanton with a single, then Noah Crisco scored on a Derek Tucker RBI single, all with no outs.

Davis stepped up with two outs in the ninth just after a failed squeeze play and sent the game to extras with an RBI single to right scoring Tucker.

“I was just trying to get a backside hit to score the run,” Davis said regarding his single.

After Concord scored a run off Weiker in the top of the 10th, Stanly rallied with two outs. Brown delivered his third RBI of the game scoring Blanton with a single, then Weiker came up with the bases loaded and fought a Coble fastball off his hands and just past the middle infielders for the game’s winning run.

They could have easily laid down, but to come out of two big deficits, give away the lead in the 10th then get a walkoff hit with two outs just shows a lot of heart,” Stanly head coach Derek Barringer said.

“(Coble) threw my a fastball on my hands, and I just hit it where it was pitched,” Weiker said.

“This group of guys competes. I wouldn’t want to be with another group of guys.”

Stanly hosts Rowan County tonight at 7.

Cracking the motor, hearing the roar, tearing down the front stretch at 200 mph with numerous other cars doing the same. The rush, excitement and adrenaline pumping all while maintaining focus and poise as you power the aggressive vehicle around the track.
