Stanly junior Legion squad loses to Rowan County

Sunday, June 22, 2014 — The junior baseball team representing Stanly County Post 76 hosted Rowan County Saturday night in a conference matchup that saw the two teams combine for 29 runs.

However, 18 of those runs went to the visitors as Rowan County jumped out to an early eight-run lead and held on for an 18-11 conference win over Post 76.

Jarrod Swaringen took the loss for Stanly County (7-4, 1-3) and did not escape the first inning, allowing six earned runs on five hits with two walks.

Stanly rallied from being down 8-0 to score seven runs over the next two innings to decrease Rowan’s lead to a single run.

Three of four Post 76 runs in the bottom of the first came on errors, with Andrew Kitts’ RBI sacrifice fly scoring Seth Smyly as the lone exception in the frame.

Will Moore, Kitts and Stewart Laws each delivered an RBI single in a four-run bottom of the second.

Two sacrifice flies and an RBI double in a six-run top of the fourth helped Rowan build the lead back to 14-7.

Trailing 15-7 in the fifth, Stanly put four more runs on the board. Smyly brought home two runs with an RBI single and Laws added another RBI base hit to bring Post 76 to within four runs.

Rowan added three more runs in the team’s final two at-bats en route to the win.

Stanly County is scheduled to travel to South Rowan tonight then return home Wednesday to face a rematch with Carson, whom Post 76 lost to in a conference road game 14-4 on June 16.

Cracking the motor, hearing the roar, tearing down the front stretch at 200 mph with numerous other cars doing the same. The rush, excitement and adrenaline pumping all while maintaining focus and poise as you power the aggressive vehicle around the track.
