Stanly County loses first game of playoff series to Southern Rowan

Tuesday, July 1 2014 — Dating back to last season, the Stanly County American Legion senior baseball squad had posted five wins in a row against Southern Rowan, including a sweep in last season’s first round of the Area III playoffs and back-to-back wins this season.

The two teams took to the field at Don Montgomery Park in this year’s first round of the playoffs, where visiting Southern Rowan took an early lead and held off Stanly late for an 8-5 win.

Dylan Carpenter and Chase Labbe each delivered RBI singles, then John Daugherty had an RBI sac fly in a three-run first inning for Southern Rowan (8-11).

David Singletary got Stanly on the board in the third with an RBI single.

Trailing 4-2 in the fourth, Stanly (10-14) had an opportunity to take the lead but a call went against Post 76. After an RBI single from Noah Crisco, Trevor Wilson laced a ball into the outfield scoring Russ Weiker. As Crisco tried to score, Wilson was ruled to have been thrown out at third before Crisco crossed the plate.

Two innings later, with the bases loaded and two out, a fielding error at short scored two runs and kept the top of the sixth going for the visitors. Labbe then scored two more runs with a double to put Southern up 8-3.

Brian Stevens and Zac Almond had back-to-back doubles in the seventh to bring Stanly to within four, then in the ninth, Almond just barely missed a home run, winding up with an RBI double scoring Crisco.Vance Deese singled and Derek Tucker walked to load the bases. However, the next batter struck out to end the game.

“We hit the ball well, but we could have gotten more from the top half of the lineup,” Stanly head coach Derek Barringer said.

“The bad call at third took a run off the board. Maybe Stevens gets a hit, we get the lead and go out differently the next inning.”

Bryan Blanton is scheduled to start for Stanly County in Game Two of the best-of-five series tonight at Southern Rowan. Game three will be Wednesday at Don Montgomery Park.
